Ari Fleischer — President George W. Bush[1]’s press secretary — was recognized even though he was in a baseball uniform at the West Street Grill in Litchfield, Conn.

The center fielder for the Ridgefield Rockers — who had just beaten the Torrington Dragons in the over-40, wooden-bats-only league — was asked where his teammates were.

“Hell, they’re drinking beer in the parking lot — but I wanted a good dinner.”

Fleischer later offered a scouting report on himself over the phone: “I excel on the bench and can jog slowly onto the field.”

The former press secretary’s old boss was also into baseball — W. is a onetime owner of the Texas Rangers.
