Pete Holmberg believes there are many closeted Donald Trump[1] supporters on the Upper East Side who will come out and vote for him in November.

The Republican candidate who hopes to unseat District 28 State Senator Liz Krueger proudly says he “loves” Trump — despite the harsh backlash from Democrats — and is hoping the president, who votes in the district, will endorse him.

“It was tough coming out as a gay man in the 1980s in high school,” Holmberg says in a campaign video. “But you know what was way worse — just horrifically nasty? — coming out as a Republican in New York City.”

Holmberg did a meet-and-greet last week in a garden off Park Avenue attended by Wall Street Journal editorial features editor James Taranto, Crystal Castles rocker Ethan Kath, DJ Henry Fiertz and Julianne Michelle, whose Amazon show “New Dogs, Old Tricks” debuts next month.

The candidate reminded me that we had met at the premiere of “Gossip Girl” in 2007, when he was the show’s publicist, before he gave up drugs and alcohol.

“I’ve been collecting signatures all month to secure a ‘Stop de Blasio’ line for myself on the November ballot, and the Democrats are telling me I can win,” Holmberg says.

Holmberg thinks Trump’s support is under-reported: “I’m seeing his results, I’m seeing his resolve, and I’m seeing long-forgotten people who are finally getting some respect in this country.”
